What Is GEO, and How Is It Different From SEO?
GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of making a business's information retrievable, understandable, and citable within AI-generated answers, not just rankable in search results. Google's own guidance, updated July 10, 2026, is direct on this point: from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. What's changed is the output, and what counts as a win.
A Business Being Found vs. A Business Being Cited
Traditional SEO earns a ranking and, with it, a click. GEO earns a citation or mention inside a synthesized answer, and a click is no longer guaranteed to follow. SparkToro's research, based on Similarweb clickstream data covering January through April 2026, found that 68.01% of US Google searches ended without any clicks, up from 60.45% just two years earlier. That's roughly a quarter of the open web's click volume gone in two years.
AI Overviews are a meaningful driver of that shift, though not the only one. AI Mode, Google's more conversational AI search experience, still accounted for a small share of searches in that same window, just 0.34%, according to SparkToro's data. But Google reported at its I/O 2026 event that AI Mode had surpassed 1 billion monthly users, with query volume more than doubling every quarter, so that share is unlikely to remain small.
Same Technical Rules, Different Output
Google's own optimization guide, updated July 10, 2026, explicitly names GEO and AEO and states plainly that, from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. The guide actively debunks several tactics circulating as best practice. llms.txt files aren't used by Google Search and won't affect visibility. Breaking content into small "chunks" isn't required. Chasing inauthentic mentions across the web doesn't substitute for genuine authority. What Google calls query fan-out- breaking a complex question into several related sub-queries before retrieving supporting pages and synthesizing an answer- is why a page's individual sections now matter as much as the page's overall ranking. A paragraph has to stand on its own as a usable answer, not just fit into a well-ranked whole.
Not everyone frames the shift the same way. Google's position, in its own words, is continuity: the fundamentals haven't changed. Rand Fishkin, founder of SparkToro and the researcher behind the zero-click data above, takes a more sobering practitioner's view: "there's not much point, nor any hope, of fighting back by simply getting better at SEO... it just won't earn you traffic the way it once did." Adobe's data also points to why: roughly a quarter of retail homepage content and about a third of individual product pages score as unreadable to AI systems by Adobe's own measurement tool. A business that fixes that gap now is working against competitors who mostly haven't started.
Where This Shows Up in Vendor and Service Selection
G2's 2026 Buyer Behaviour Report, based on a survey of 1,038 B2B software decision-makers conducted in June 2026, found that 82% of buyers had sourced a software recommendation from an AI chatbot in the prior 24 months, with half of those saying AI had its greatest impact specifically at narrowing and comparing options. But the same report found something worth pairing with that number: review sites (38%) edged out AI chatbots (37%) as the single biggest influence on which vendors actually make a buyer's shortlist, the first time that's happened in G2's tracking.
